I've been using XP Home SP1 for 2.5 months now and have been trying to
evaluate it. I would say the biggest difference I have noticed between XP
and its predecessors is that when a program malfunctions, it doesn't crash
the whole system. You merely close out the damaged program and go onto
other things. With 95, 98 or ME, usually the whole darn computer would
freeze up.

The XP graphics and icons are smoother and more eye-catching, for
what's that's worth. System Restore is a VERY useful tool. As far as
hardware, I've had some trouble with older USB devices that are supposedly
XP compatible, but eventually I got them working. For now.

In conclusion, XP is definitely better than 95, 98 or ME. But its
not perfect. I still get the occasional error message and sometimes
programs will freeze up. But being a Windows user I'm used to that anyway.

HistoryFan:
I've been using XP since 01-2002. I like it and haven't had many problems as
some that I've seen in the news groups. But in reference to your second
paragraph, you will find, if you haven't already, that those eye catching
graphics are huge resource gobblers. Sometime you can find signed and
updated drivers for the older programs, but the ones that I couldn't I just
gave up on because they created more problems that they were worth. Any way
I haven't had the moral crushing problems as some seen here in the news
groups.
