View Full Version : 1 PC Can't Print to Network Printer

I have a WinXP Pro PC that cannot print to a shared
printer on a Windows 2003 Server, which is connected to
LPT1 on the server. All other workstations can print to
it, however.

The printer has been working but recently stopped. The
workstation reports that the printer driver is not loaded
and offers to load them. After loading them, nothing
changes.

When the printer is reinstalled locally, it CHANGES the
settings on the network printer to the same port it is
configured for (\\servername\printername) and
automatically becomes a shared printer (although no hand
appears on the printer icon).

When either of these settings are changed on the server
or the workstation, the other changes too. In other
words, if the share is taken off of the local
workstation, it is removed from the server printer, too.
If the server printer's port is changed back to LPT1, it
also changes the workstation printer to LPT1.

Here are the exact error messages:

When you right-click the workstation printer and choose
properties, it says, "The 'HP LaserJet 6P'printer driver
is not installed on this computer. Some printer
properties will not be accessible unless you install the
printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now?"

If you say no, the printer property window opens. If you
choose print test page from the General tab, the
following message comes up instantaneously, "Test page
failed to print. Would you like to view the print
troubleshooter for assistance?"

This is really weird. I guess I just hope that somebody
out there has seen this before, as it makes no sense
whatsoever. I have done a system restore to a time when
printing was working fine, but that doesn't work either!
