View Full Version : Icons don't move when dragged

Just begun using Dell-installed WinXP Home. I'm surprised
to find that when you drag icons on the desktop they don't
move on the screen while you move the mouse with the
button held down. They jump to the new position when you
let go of the button, so rearranging them is not a
problem. But it seems odd that you don't see them move as
you move the mouse. Dragging icons hasn't looked like this
since about Windows 3.0!
Can someone tell me how I can change it back to the way it
was with Win2000, WinME etc? Can't find any settings to
change, the help file doesn't help, can't find anything on
the internet. It's a minor irritation but I hope someone
knows how to fix it. Many thanks.

Many thanks for your help. However, this hasn't fixed the
problem.
When you uncheck "Show window contents while dragging" the
icons now move when you drag them. At the same time,
window contents don't move - only the outline moves.
But when you turn the function back on, the icons again
don't move, but the windows do. This looks like a bug to
me, unless there's some simple override command.
Any ideas? Hope you can help!

Looks like it was indeed a bug! Although the machine was
newly delivered this week, I found there was an update
available from Intel for the display adapter, dated April
2003. I installed this and now the icons move correctly
when you drag them!
Many thanks for your help.

If you have the option enabled, you should see the icon window ( and the
original icon in the same place). Totally 2.
You may try reinstalling the video card drivers and see if it is solved.
