View Full Version : Windows Shut Down and USB Problem

I've just installed a new Logitech Elite USB keyboard and
now my computer takes in upwards to a minute to shut
down. When I unplug the keyboard, Windows will shutdown
as normal. I've searched the Knowlege Base and I found
this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;826367

I'm guessing I need that updated Hidserv.dll file, but I
can't find it anywhere. The version of that file on my
computer is older. Can anybody help me?

Thanks, but that's the old version. I need this one or a
newer one:

Read the KB - it clearly states you have to call MS for the hotfix. They
won't charge you for the call if you say that all you need is the hotfix,
and provide the article number.

You mention Window updates in your message but, just to be clear, you do
have SP1, right?

Without it, USB2.0 devices will not work at speed.

USB2 But when I connect it to my computer (working with XP) if the disk is
correctly installed... an error message appears that explains that the
device will work in slow speed (USB1) and that it is possible to find the
right "controler usb with high speed" to improve the transfer speed....

You need XP SP1 to have USB 2 support.
Below are two previous replies from Alex that addresses this issue.

Check in Device Manager; in the USB section, to see if there is an
'Enhanced' Host controller, and that when you d-click and look in Driver
details that the usbehci.sys file is among them. that is the USB2.0
controller.

If not there go to
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;822603
and under 'More Information' take 'Download the 822603 package now'
which is the set of drivers - you may need to preserve the files it
extracts when it runs, and then point a Driver update or New Hardware to
the .inf file in that set

---------------------

There is a catch 22 here - USB 2 only arrives in XP as part of SP1, and
if you use the Express install, and there is no USB 2 installed at the
time, it is not downloaded.
Go to Windows Update, and on the left, take Windows Update Catalog (you
may first need to check this as shown, in the 'Personalise' item).

In that;
Take the second item, Driver Updates

Take the bottom item - Other Devices

In the search page select
Microsoft Corporation
Windows2000 Professional SP1
(*not* Windows XP)
and type USB into the Contains box

That should lead to the download of 'NEC USB software update', which
appears to be the same as the one for XP SP1,

Check your motherboard ports support USB 2.0 (my computer is two years old
and I needed to add a PCI card to get USB 2.0 because my mobo only supported
USB 1.1).

If you are sure your mobo supports 2.0 then try these pages...

Quote: "If you have recently installed SP1 on your computer, please follow
the directions listed later in this article to obtain the latest USB 2.0
drivers".

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329632&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

While you are at it you might also look at this..
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822603&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

also

Check you have an "Enhanced Host Controller" under "Universal Serial Bus
Controller" in Device Manager.

I think I recognise this...
I've had the same thing with a USB2 device on an older machine that only
supports 'USB1'. What the message is telling you is that you have a nice
fast device but it is having to reduce its speed to be compatible with
USB1. This is unfortunate because full-speed USB2 runs at 40x (?) the
speed of USB1, so it's a significant improvement.
You need to verify that your PC is running with USB 1.0 or 1.1 hardware.
A CAUTION: although USB2 devices should work on a PC with USB1, I have
had 1 device go faulty in such a setup. I don't know if it's coincidence
or it really was a problem. The USB2 specification also has different
power requirements, so be aware that your USB2 device may stress the USB1.
Also you could upgrade your PC (for USB2) which is drastic, or buy a
cheap new card for your PC which provides USB2 (don't know if a bios
upgrade would be necessary).
Hope that helps.
