Monitor goes off as XP begins

Why does my monitor go off as XP begins? I am upgrading
from WindowsME on a Gateway with 1.7ghz.

I did enter the wrong product ID when I installed it the
first time, I used the one for the other computer, but
after I re-installed it by booting from the CD with the
correct product ID it still does the same thing. Is this
a software problem or hardware problem.

Sounds like a software driver setting to me. I hate to type this, but try
contacting the tech support guys at Gateway and ask them.
