View Full Version : Windows Explorer error: "Buffer overrun"
Tom Stephenson

Every time I try to run the "My Computer" function or
anything like that (Windows Explorer) I get the following
error message:
"Buffer overrun detected!
Program: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted
the program's internal state. The program cannot safely
continue execution and must now be terminated."
What can I do about this? Any help would be appreciated.

Tom,
Do you have all critical updated installed? Do you have an Anti-Virus
application installed and running? Have you searched your hard drives
lately with the Anti-Virus software?
Thanks,

What is the version of explorer.exe on this machine? What kind of third
party applications do you have installed on this machine?
Thanks,

I have the same issue.
I do have latest AV installed and did a complete scan.
Also have all hotfixes and security patches installed.
Can you tell me how to troubleshoot/resolve this?

This happens on both explorer and IE. Explorer.exe is v 6.0.2800.1106, as is iexplorer.exe
This occurred right after the user downloaded and installed a 3d screenesave of some planets. She does not recall the URL. I do not see an option to uninstall the scr via Control Panel.
The problem occurs whenever trying to open or explore My Computer ro whenever using IE.
Other third party app, whcih still work are a Citrx Client McAfee Enterprose 7.1 client. However, I'm convinced it's related to the scr...even though NcAfee doesn't find a problem

I'm sure that installing a sceensaver does more than just copying over some
scr files. Unfortunately I don't know what else it does. I do know that
the .scr files are probably copied to the %windir%\system32 folder unless
the installer copied them somewhere else. You can find them by typing 'dir
*.scr /s' in a command window from the root of the system partition.
Sorry I can't be of more help,
