My Files Are Gone

I installed XP Upgrade from 98 SE. I had a bunch of files in a folder on my desktop in 98 SE. After installing XP, those files are gone 'cept the folders are still there. Is this some sick joke or am I going to have to cry miserably forever because 5 years
of what I have been working on got deleted when installing? My friend says they could be "hidden" but they aren't. I took off the "Hidden Files and Folders". Please someone... tell me good news.

Firstly
Use the search function to look for the documents. Use the advanced search
option where you are looking for some data/text that is contained within
the document.
Secondly
Always back-up data before doing a system re-build or upgrade.
