View Full Version : Off line files blocking .MDB files

Excuse me if someone's already answered my post from 3 days ago. Somehow I
can't find it and it appears to have been removed from the server. I'm
trying to sync my home and laptop using the offline files feature, but it's
giving me error messages that it can't sync .mdb Access files. Is there a
way around this?

Hi, Ed.
Your post is still there, but nobody posted an answer yet. Your other
question (about the toolbar) has two replies. Have you seen those?
If you haven't already, be sure that you set OE to View | Current View... |
Show Replies to My Messages.
Several things might cause you to think your messages have been removed from
the server. First, are you connecting directly to the Microsoft public
server? It's free and does not require you to log on. Many other news
servers simply "slurp" the messages from there and relay them - and any
responses - back and forth, often resulting in delays, out-of-sequence
threads, and lost messages.
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics
That should connect you directly to the MS server and bring you right back
here.
How many messages are you downloading at a time? The default is 300, which
misses a lot in an active newsgroups like this one, which presently shows
over 23,000 messages on the server. Go to Tools | Options... and click the
Read tab. Under News, change the default, or just uncheck the box to get
them all - but be prepared for a long wait, even on broadband.
For your question on Access .MDB files, you might have better luck in one of
the several Access newsgroups. Click Newsgroups and check the Microsoft
server. Type "access" into the search box and you should find nearly a
hundred, about half of them in English.

RC,
Thanks 1,000,000. Without knowing it you just solved another huge problem.
I've been trying to connect to the news groups from an international
location using a differant ISP than Mindspring. I've been going through the
Mindspring news server which won't let me connect unless I'm at home, and
haven't been able to use the newsgroup.
I switched my read setting to 1000 messages but had already downloaded the
default 300. I'm having trouble getting it to go back on that newsgroup and
get the rest. I'll try from another computer, but as of now haven't seen
the other two replys.
I've been using the Access news groups lately and will try the post there.
Again thanks a million. You solved a bigger problem than the one I posted.

Greetings --
Are you running SQL Server on one of the computers? That's just
one of the minimum requirements to be able to use/update an access
database off-line. From the Access Help files:
You need the following software to create an use offline data:
a.. Microsoft Access 2002 installed on a client computer, such as a
laptop or home computer.
b.. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition installed and running
on a client computer.
c.. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 installed and running on a remote
server.
d.. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later installed on the client
computer and remote server.

Uh, not if you modify the files at home and at the office.
It is a database. People spend years writing software to synchronize
database files like this. Usually they don't work 100%.

I'm not trying to sync a database modified on both computers. I use laplink
successfully to keep the latest version of my files on both computers. I'm
trying to do the same with Windows XP offline file syncronization.
Somewhere (probably in the registry) there's a block of access files in this
sync. My goal is to find how to disable the block.
