Unless you've got a high-end scanner, they aren't natively sharable. There
are third-party programs that are supposed to allow you to share a scanner,
but I have no idea how good they are, or if they're worth the cost.

Unlike sharing a printer, where you can let your printouts pile up until you
collect them, you still have to put the documents into the scanner, so the
ability to remotely press the "scan" button doesn't seem like much of a
benefit to me. Of course some people might have other uses for remote
scanning that I haven't figured out yet.

A scanner is not normally a networkable device. There are networkable
scanners available (Epson make some nice ones, they start at about
$3,000)... and there is software available to enable scanning, but it isn't
free. The client software is, the server software (for the PC with the
scanner) certainly isn't. It's generally more economical to purchase a
separate scanner for each PC.

As for the firewire port.... in itself it cannot be networkable - just as a
USB port cannot be or an LPT port for that matter... but what are you
attaching to it? If it's a hard drive, you'll need to set the drive for
sharing and give the appropriate permissions etc....

Greetings --

Normally, input devices cannot be shared, at all, but this isn't
always true of scanners. You'll be able to share the scanner only if
it's manufacturer provided specialized software for that purpose.
