System stops responding when keyboard is used

Hi, I don't know if anyone can help but my computer seems to have totally
stuffed up :(
It boots up fine and the lights on the keyboard flash on then off once, I
can use the computer, but as soon as I hit any key on the keyboard the
system stops responding - both the keyboard and mouse become instantly
unresponsive. I had just carried out a rather large install using Windows
Update (as I hadn't done it for a while) but I don't know if any of the
programs that were installed were the cause. I tried rolling back with
system restore, but it doesn't make a difference.

The system is running Windows XP Pro on a Gigabyte GA7ZM motherboard with a
Duron 1.3 GHz and 256 Mb PC133 RAM. The keyboard is just a standard one on a
PS2 connection, as is the mouse, not USB and no fancy navigator keys etc.

If anyone has any ideas then please let me know, I'm just about to take my
finals at University and I'm trying to finish off my last coursework. Not
easy without a keyboard... :(

Hi Sam,

I'd like to check the following:

1. Verify the keyboard has been plugged in the
correct position on the mother board.
2. If possible, test the problem using another
keyboard to see if this is a hardware problem.
3. Boot the computer in safe mode to test the problem.

1) Restart the computer.
2) Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup
menu appears.
3) Choose Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter.
4) Check if the issue persists when booting in this
mode.

Hi Sam,

Try going to Device Manager, uninstalling the keyboard, reboot, and
let Windows install the keyboard using its drivers.

If you have a spare keyboard, try swapping it and seeing if the
problem recurs.
