Program cutout

I am new to xp and I am having problems with some of my
programmes, when I click to open them, they will attempt
to become active then disappear, with no error messages.
As well I occasionally receive a message advising me
there appears to be an error with windows system 32?
Could this be causing my problem? As you can tell I am
very confused as I am nearly new at this. Thanking you in
advance.
