Is there a way to prevent the drop down history list in
the address bar in exploror?

Clearing IE's History will remove typed entries here, but will also clear
the history of all sites you have visited as well. Or, you can download and
install TweakUI (http://www.systemsmedic.com/TweakUI.htm) and under the IE
tab, there is an option to "Clear document, run, typed URL history on exit"
