Can anyone answer the following questions before I spend any more months
fighting this Microsoft software?

I now have a number of machines running XP and using the XP version of
Windows Messenger. I have created several accounts.

I have one W2K machine using MSN Messenger 6.1

The machines normally all connect to the net via a Netgear adsl router,
and after downloading the latest drivers and speaking to Netgear support
I can communicate in sound and vision from outside of the router to one
of the machines, although I often have to reboot that machine for this
to work. The sound and video all work fine between XP machines on my
side of the router.

I can connect separately via a dial up connection for test purposes, but
only to the one machine behind the router.

When I try to make MSN Messenger send pictures or audio to Windows
messenger, I get messages saying that the 2 apps are not compatible. Is
this right?

Can I expect uPnP to support more than one machine behind the router or
is this a limitation of the 'system'?

It really should not be this difficult to get this to work. Is there
anywhere that I can find a sensible discourse on what uPnP can or can't
do.
