I recently sent the enquiry below
I have installed an windows XP update over windows 98. I ran the
appropriate diagnostic and got an Upgrade report and dealt with
problems listed which were very few.
After installation the computer still boots up with the normal windows
98 running memory test then it opens Windows XP followed by the
welcome screen. It then runs Windows installer every time, the
normal windows XP desktop then opens. On closing the computer simply
reboots itself everytime.
I have followed the instructions and made sure Automatic restart is
switched off. I have also checked that the power management is
enabled and that the computer is simply a standard PC and therefore
have checked that NT Apm/Legacy Interface Node is disabled.
What do I do next.

Checking the System Information I have found that even though word and
excel run as usual, the system information has the message.
Microsoft Word 2000 has not beeen started or installed. Install and/
or start application and press F5 to refresh. Excel gives the same
message. Publisher has all the system information complete. I have
reinstalled Word with no change.

Could this be effecting the whole running of XP.
