Hi. I just bought a computer at an auction with XP home
installed on it. I'm a 98 user, so this is a bit
different for me. Anyways, all the files and programs are
administrator protected and I'm not sure what to do to get
rid of the administration and make myself administrator.
I tried installing a program which of course I could not.
I'm not even sure that I could reinstall Windows XP
because of my limited access. HELP!
Thanks :-)

Boot into Safe Mode and log in as Administrator. It's 99.9% probable (if XP
was pre-installed) that the password is blank.

I think you are now going to have to do a repair install
of XP. Why did you need to disable the built-in
Administrator account? You shouldn't mess with that one as
it's your only way in in case of trouble, as you've found
out!

i learned from this mistake.
but i had to disable it, because my pc automatically log in to the administrators account.
after i disabled it, i can use which user to log in with.

Try booting into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key repeatedly when you start
your computer. You should get an Advanced Menu and then select the option
for Safe Mode. You might still have your Administrator account. If you don't
see one try typing "Administrator" into the username box and then enter the
password you used when XP was setup. Once in you can access the Control
Panel->User accounts and create another Administrator account for day to day
use.

By default an Administrator account is created While XP is installed. Then
the very first time you launch Windows you are asked for the name(s) of
account to create. The first name you enter is by default an Administrator
account too. But you should have the hidden administrator account available
to you. This account cannot be easily disabled or removed.

You cannot disable the hidden Administrator account period. It is a safe
guard so that we don't intentionally or accidentally create the problem that
you thought you had created. :-)
