View Full Version : Printer, Sound not working after McAfee load

After experiencing system slowness due to programs being
written to Startup, we purchased and loaded McAfee
Internet Security Suite 2004 ver 6.0.
This brought the system to its knees as it was so resource-
intensive we were unable to do anything. Additionally, we
are unable to print, the PC has no sound (no audio
driver), and we are unable to install/uninstall through
windows.
I contacted McAfee and was able to delete all the files
through regedit. We are running much faster, but I am
still unable to print, install a printer (the Add Printer
Wizard does not appear), or install any audio drivers.
This all happened after we loaded McAfee, virus scans are
all clean, but I need to know how to get my functionality
back for printing and audio.
Any clues?

Sounds like you might need to do a repair install. You won't lose your
data. It will just install any missing or corrupted files. Insert the
WinXP CD into CD-ROM and select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Have you tried to do a System Restore? Start/All
Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. Restore your computer to
a point before you installed McAfee. That's the best way to get that back.
As for your original problem, there are several other options. One is a
small little application aimed specifically at startup items called Startup
Monitor, available here:
http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml
Another is the paid version of Ad-Aware, called Ad-Aware Plus. Available
here:
http://www.lavasoft.de/
Startup Monitor is free, and also gives you control over what you allow to
add itself to the startup key. It asks you if something wants to add
itself, and you can say yes or no. Ad-Aware Plus, on the other hand, simply
doesn't allow programs to add themselves to the startup key, period. No
warning, no choice. Sounds like you need at least the free version of
Ad-Aware though, available from the same location. It doesn't have the
startup function, but it will scan your computer for spyware and remove it.
