I have a laptop running Msft XP Professional. While at
school I am on a LAN. Whenever I receive an e-mail with a
link to click on my computer tell me I have to log on to
AOL to retrieve the link (url).
I am already online using the LAN.
How do I change my file associations so that internet
explorer opens the link without having to sign on to aol.
Thanks

Go to Control Panel, Internet Options. Click on the programs tab. At the
bottom, check in the box next to "Internet Explorer should check to see
whether it is the default browser." Click OK. Now open up IE and when it
asks if it should be the default browser, say yes.

Thanks Patty,
I think I have already tried that and it didn't do the
trick. I will try again.
Can it have anything to do with file extension
associations that determine what program is used to open
certain file extensions would do the trick. I noticed that
when looking through the folders options in control panel
that the file extensions "HTM" & "HTML" were set to open
with the AOL program. I thought maybe if I changed these
to open with internet explorer that might solve the
problem.

Try (in Internet Explorer) Tools>Internet Options> Connections tab and check
"Never dial a connection."

Yes, that might do it. But then when you are not at work, AOL might give
you fits. Up at the top of your file associations, you'll also see a list
of things with NONE listed as the extension. Several will have URL at the
beginning of the description. Mine have IE icons associated with them, do
yours? Especially the ones for hypertext transfer and hypertext transfer
with privacy. I also thought about HillBilly's suggestion, and he might be
correct. Take a look at that also.

Download the .reg fix.
"Set Internet Explorer as default browser"
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k
* Use this only if IE is installed in its default location [C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer] *
