View Full Version : Windows XP upgrade gone weird

Hi,
I just finished updating to XP from ME. My Outlook 2000
disappeared as expected, but when I reinstalled it I seem
to have lost all my previous folders and messages within
them (including the messages I had in my "old" Inbox)
where are they and how can I bring them back to
the "newly Reinstalled" version of Outlook 2000?
Second issue, when I try to open Word 2000 I get a
windows installer window, saying it is installing Word
2000, then another windows says it needs a file that must
be in a CD-ROM, and after I cancel out of that, only then
Word 2000 opens. Needless to say this is very annoying,
also it doesn't allow me to use Word as my e-mail editor.
Third issue. My computer, a Sony VAIO PCV-LX800, Pentium
III 800 Mhz processor, 256 MB RAM, now runs more noisily.
Before it used to run very quietly and only when I opened
certain programs or run a certain command I would hear
what (I think) is the processor fan running "faster" and
then it would go back to a quiet mode. Now it is always
running in the "noisy" (faster) mode and never seems to
reduce speed/noise.
I would appreciate some help with these issues.
Thanks,
Roy

The only advice I can offer is never ever upgrade to Winxp, it always seems
to cause problems. A clean install is the only way to get a trouble free OS.

Hi,
Did you backup the pst file before upgrading? If so, it may be lost =
permanently. Why did you not simply upgrade in place? Start/search/files =
and look for *.pst to see if the old mail store still exists. If so, you =
should be able to import it.
On the MSWord issue, have you tried letting the installer run to =
completion? It may be set to install certain features on demand when =
accessed, and this behavior would be normal.
The noisy machine may be caused by Power Management settings. They are =
likely not the same as with the old system. You may have to do some =
tweaking to get what you want, keeping in mind that WindowsXP will be =
making higher demands on your hardware than the previous operating =
system.

Search for the old PST files. Import them into your new Outlook setup.

May as well insert the Office 2000 (or Word2000) CD and be done with it.
The Office products use a different set of files to run in the NT
environment than they use to run in the Win9x/ME environment. I suspect
once all of the programs have been adjusted for XP, that features such
as using Word for an email editor will return.

Don't know. Quite a bit of real time optimization occurs in a brand new
XP installation. If left on its own, it can take a few weeks to
complete. This could account for some of the added activity you're
seeing. You can run defrag a few times to help speed things along. Since
you've just installed XP, the first run of defrag will take quite a bit
of time compared to subsequent runs.
Also, check to see if "Indexing service" is enabled. If it is, you may
want to turn this off. This is similar to the old Office Find Fast in
that it builds catalogs about your files to aid in faster searching.
It's benefits are geared more to a large network than to a home setup.
You can turn this service off in Administrative Tools> Services. Change
the startup type to disabled.

I don't agree with this at all. I've seen many upgrades that work
fine. My recommendation is the opposite of yours: you should
almost always at least try an upgrade. You can always back off
and reinstall cleanly if problems develop.
