View Full Version : Little red crosses on the top left side of parts of web pages

Since a recent upgrade of Windows XP I get little(boxes)
with a red cross on the top left screen on many webpages.
It appears as if I am missing a tool (VM) or an option
switched of, so I can not watch all of the webpage. Any
thoughts what might have happened here and how to get it
back again so I can watch all the web pages again?
Kind Regards from Amsterdam

There is a file or picture that is called from the
web-server to fill that area, but it can't be found or your
security/multimedia settings are preventing it being
displayed.
If some are showing most likely your computer settings are
correct, but the server (or the requesting HTML tag is
wrong.
You can check settings in Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet
Options/Advanced...

VM - Java Virtual Machine.
You will usually get prompted to download it from the microsoft site which
will then say that you need to install windows xp service pack 1.
If you dont want to install the service pack, go to
http://java.sun.com/getjava/ and click download.
Now your little x boxes will either be replaced with pictures of coffee cups
or if the web designer has done their job well, you will be able to see
animations, games or whatever they have put to be displayed in that
position.
Microsoft and Sun Microsystems have been battling out in court over who has
rights to distribute the java technology. I think microsoft was ordered to
put their version of java in sp1 and not include it with windows xp's
shipping distribution but as an add on. Someone may correct me if i am wrong
on this.
