email trouble

i have recently purchased this computer with windows xp.
i have never had trouble downloading email before, and
have used the same isp for years. this computer connects
to my pop server, begins to download and then i get a
message that states my pop has been non responsive would i
like to wait? it is in the middle of a download so how is
it possible that it is non responsive? i have had nothing
but trouble with this computer.... i times out when i am
downloading, wont run more than one window at a time...
is this something to do with xp?? HELP!!
