View Full Version : LAN and Internet in XP Pro_Modem giving 651 error+NIC giving out [no valid address]

I have just installed XP Pro on a laptop.
The modem is a soft modem and reports as
HAMR500. The NIC is a Sis 100 card.

The modem makes no dial tone and quickly reports
600 series error codes - 651 predominantly.
According to diags I have checked the setup of modem is
fine?
NIC is ditto.

I would like to play with IRQ settings and addressing,, as
I have found in the past that this is often the problem in
non-communication. But I am both guessing and ignorant of
how to turn off auto config.
I have set "plug n play OS" OFF in CMOS.

Is someone able to go back on experience and point me in the
right direction to get this machine talking?

Thanks

What do you mean "reports as"? Did you run a diagnostic like Aida32 to
find out exactly what the modem is, or go to the laptop mftr.'s website
for drivers? That is what I'd start out with in case you've got the
wrong modem drivers installed.

Once you are 100% sure you have the right modem drivers installed, you
can query the modem from the Control Panel applet. Is this what you
mean by "according to diags I have checked"? If the modem responds,
then you know it is alive in Windows. The next useful step is to hook
up the modem to a telephone line and use Hyperterminal to call another
number as a test. For instance, you might hook the modem to your home
telephone and then have Hyperterminal dial your cell phone. If the cell
phone doesn't ring, then you probably have a hardware issue.

It is unlikely that IRQ settings are the issue. XP is a modern os and
devices can easily share IRQ's.
