Every time I startup a folder window "System32" is
displayed. Why? Is it telling me something? How can I
stop it?

If you have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card, see:
www.kellys-korner.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Tip 260: System32 Folder Opens Upon Boot
If not, see:

Yes. I do have Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card. Well
spotted!
Down loaded the patch suggested. Norton AntiVirus
thought it to be malicious ... had to authorise it before
running.
Problem solved - many thanks.
