lost file in xp pro

I have lost a file in XP Pro. The file is <windows
Root>\system32\hal.dll. I can not get the computer to
boot. How do I get this file back in? Will I have to
reformat my hard drive to get back in? Thanks for the
help.

The HAL.DLL is created during the Windows installation, so you may
simply want to reinstall Windows. See "How to Perform an In-Place
Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP"
