Here is my problem, I had to do a system restore on XP Home edition. I went
to Win Update and ran the scan to update XP....I COULD NOT INSTALL the
Q817287 "Critical Update Catalog Database Corruption In Windows XP"...each
time I tried, it would download but the install would fail, even with Norton
AV disabled.
I have retried at least a dozen times, and it still failed to install. I
have the Automatic Updates checked, but it just notifies me that there is a
new update (located in lower rt. of task bar). I started to get the Windows
Update Icon in the taskbar that said I needed to download and install
Q817287 Critical Update Catalog Database Corruption In Win XP....I
downloaded and it INSTALLED( the box came up and said it was successfully
installed!)....well, now I keep getting the SAME Automatic Update to
download and install.....WHY isn't Windows seeing that this was
installed?...WHY wouldn't it install on the Windows Update Site-it kept
FAILING to install.....Why does Automatic Update installs it, but it keeps
coming back like it was never "successfully installed" as the update box
said?
What can I do to fix this and HOW can I tell IF this Critical Update IS
installed on my PC?

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. Then get -
only - Q817287 and install it; you should then be able to carry on
with other updates, and the problem will not recur

Very dangerous instructions. Do NOT rename the folder. Rename ONLY the file
'catroot2' which resides in C:windows/system32

Incorrect.

The fix is to rename the catroot2 "folder" under C:\Windows\system32. =
For that matter, I do not believe there is any catroot2 file that I've =
ever heard of.

Catroot2 *is* a folder and is what needs to be renamed
