So my computer had a CONFIG_LIST_FAILED error and I had
to upgrade the windows to repair it without losing
everything on my harddrive, but now when I start my
computer back up my monitor gives me an error message. A
blue blox appears in the middle of the monitor after it
looks like Windows XP has completely loaded and says:
-------------------------------------|
INVALID MODE
MAX: 1024 x 760

PLEASE CHANGE TO VALID RESOLUTION
------------------------------------

I press the buttons on my plug and play flat screen to
try and fix it manually but nothing happens. I wonder if
it is because of the catalyst drivers on my ATI 9600XT
card that are still installed. Does anyone know a
solution? Pressing F8 doesn't seem to get me into the
Advanced Options Menu either when starting up.

Try booting into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, delete all instances of
your monitor and video card, reboot; Windows should redetect everything and
install appropriate drivers.

How can I select Safe Mode without an improper shutdown?

Hit the F8 key during system boot and you should get a troubleshooting
screen with options; one of which is to start in Safe Mode.
