SP2 Release date

[EBMCS03]

Anyone know when the SP2 release date is? Seems like I
need something in there to fix my TV Tuner thats hanging
my system. goto www.microsoft.com and type this in the
search " 817589 " and it will come up.

Most likely a few months.
RC1 of SP 2 is released today, but it is not intended for general use.

It is unsupported and use strictly at your own risk.

You need to call Microsoft directly as referenced in the article.
State you are calling about a hotfix and you will not be asked for a
credit card number.

No date has yet been announced, but most estimates are that it
will be sometime this summer.

According to the article you posted, that fix is not for general use so its
unlikely it will be in SP2. The article gives instructions for obtaining
the fix directly from Microsoft. You will need to contact them following
the instructions in the article you posted.

This file is a common file that comes with the OS for a standard
installation, so any updates to it in a hotfix will also be
implemented in the next service pack.

The version number for this file in SP2 Release Candidate 1 (now
available for public download) is 5.3.2600.2096, a higher version
number than the one in the 817589 fix, this indicates that 817589
is included in SP2.

Thanks, Torgeir. The problem is, the article claims the fix is only for a
specific issue and it doesn't apply to everyone so they may not include it
as a basic hotfix for all systems.

I have never heard of a public hotfix (a.k.a. a hotfix documented in
the KB) that modifies common system files that is not implemented in
a later service pack.


Anyway, take a closer look at the KB for the hotfix in question,
especially the last line in the quoted text below:

That is usually because the fix has not yet had widespread testing, so
they do not want yet to put it in regular windows update: they supply it
to those identified as having the problem, so as to get reports back 'it
did [not] work'. Normally though they get into the next SP, and it is
probably there being one more possible risk for the Beta testers,
Especially as it is a standard component, not a 'bolt on extra'
