Windows XP Professional SP1 has problems finding and
playing its own .WAV files. I recently tried to make
Outlook 2002 SP3 play a sound when it displays a
reminder. I discovered that Windows XP had the Reminder
sound set to MEDIA/Office 97/REMINDER.WAV, except that
there is no REMINDER.WAV file there or anywhere. (I never
set this; I think REMINDER.WAV may have been present in
Windows 98 before I upgraded and this was some sort of a
holdover.)
So I created one (copying and renaming the chord.wav file
in the MEDIA folder in c:/Windows. Then it worked.
However, I made the mistake after that of going to the
Sounds settings in Control Panel, where I assumed I
should really be setting sounds for program events. (At
least, that's Microsoft's theory.) I set the Reminder
program event to chord.wav, which is present in the
c:/Windows/Media folder, and which plays when you test it
under the Sounds option in the Control Panel. However, it
won't play when the Outlook Reminder displays, and if you
edit the Reminder and click on the sound, it shows the
sound as chord.wav, but then says it can't find
chord.wav, and when you Browse to find a new file, it
always defaults to your My Documents folder. Besides, you
shouldn't have to browse through your whole computer to
find a sound file for every single reminder event. That's
what the Sounds settings are for.
So, obviously, Windows XP Professional SP1 or Outlook
2002 SP3 has problems knowing what folder to look in for
sounds for program events. It's obviously not looking in
c:/Windows/Media, even though that's where it stores
the .WAV files.
Anyone know if there's a fix for this glitch?
