first, i need to know how do i tell without asking the
my computer's manufacturer what size my 12.6 gb hard
drive
can be increased to with an upgrade...i want to take out
my old 12.6 gb hard drive and replace it with a newer
larger one...how can i tell what my
bios and motherboard will read on the newer hard drive?
there isnt an upgrade to the bios for my ibm computer as
i know of , is there a blind bios i can use to trick the
computer???how many gb's will the mother board and bios
read on new hard drive??
what can i increase my 12.6 gb hard drive , pentium 2,
400 mhz to a newer hard drive? what will be the largest
hard drive i can
put in my system so the motherboard and bios will be
allowed to read the hard drive's gb's..

I seem to recall reading somewhere that there was a hurdle at about 37 gig
but most BIOS's don't have a problem with the larger (up to approx 60 gig).
If you want to be sure then get a 30 gig (or maybe two).

You can install any size hard drive, but you might have to
partition in to reduce size to something less than maximum,
depending on your BIOS. Or you can buy a PCI IDE card that
will allow faster access and doesn't have the limit. There
are also software solutions.
You can update (flash most BIOSs too)
Go to www.maxtor.com or www.wdc.com to find information on
hd installations.

I wasn't clear, the limit is reading any partition, you can
have 6 30GB partitions on a 180 GB drive (with some loss to
overhead).

the old ones place in the tower how do i install the
operating system? i got a recovery disk with 98 on it
from ibm. i aslo got an upgrade to xp pro..i can do a
format and then install the 98 but do i have to install
the drivers to the new hard drive first for it to work
and be able to see the recover disk?

so if i get a harddrive thats 40gb and it doesnt read it
all, say it reads only 30. then do i have to do a
partition or will it work and i just use the 30. or if i
have extra gb that it cant read then i have to do a
partition so the 30 will work right??

Sounds like you better bring it around and let me build it :-)
You should be able to boot from the XP CD - if so, then simply follow the
prompts. XP will allow you to partition and format your drive before
installing Windows. Keep your Win98 CD handy as you will likely be asked to
produce it before XP installation will proceed. This *should* work, but the
"recovery" CD has me a bit worried. If you can boot from the "recovery" CD
then perhaps you should install 98. If you do want to install 98 (heaven
only knows why) and can't boot from the CD then use the 98 Boot Disk (you
did make one, didn't you?) to fire up the system and then run setup from the
CD.
Hope this helps....... Kev

i dont have a windows 98 cd, my windows 98 is my recovery
disk... my xp pro is just upgrade , not the full version,
for the recovery disks which has 98 on it...
if i can get 98 on it and it work can i install xp over
98 just like now..
you sounded like i have a full version of xp pro, does
it matter if i just have the upgrade version , can i boot
from the xp cd if its just an upgrade then install 98
then xp over 98

Sam,
- Easiest way is to go to mobo mfr's Website and see what it tells you for
max HDD size, plus make sure you DL/install the latest BIOS for that mobo.
If that doesn't answer your question, call/Email the mobo mfr's Tech Supt
and ask. [I just had a client of mine do this for his Micron P2-400 and he
was told that the mobo will support 40GB max . . . so we're replacing the
mobo/CPU/memory and putting an 80GB HDD in this case.]
- Understand that a P2-400 is a bit enemic for WinXP, so you might want to
consider upgrading the mobo/CPU/memory as I noted above (which was a good
part of the motivating force behind my client's decision).
- NOTE: I have a personal "prejudice" against creating small (less than 80GB
<g>) partitions on HDDs these days. NTFS does very well at managing these
large HDDs and programs are becoming bigger and bigger these days (can you
spell "bloatware" <vbg>)!

As I said - try it! The 98 recovery CD *should* be bootable. If not, use a
floppy an run setup once booted up. As for upgrading I don't know 100% but
would imagine the installed 98 should be a qualifying product for XP
upgrade. Check here for more details:
