I cannot seem to acheive this despite following MS own
video all I keep getting is 'the backup file name could
not be uses........please ensure it is a valid path &
that you have sufficient access'!!!!
I'm staggered that such a fundamental requirement as this
should be so complex

Hi Howard,
The default back-up program that ships with Windows XP cannot backup to a
cd-rom. The work-around is to save the backup file on your hard drive and
after it is saved, copy the backup file to a CD-R using a CD-writing
program.

Windows backup won't backup to optical media directly.
I use BackUP MyPC from Stomp.
It will backup up to CDR, DVD -/+ R, HDD and across a network. Shadow copies
"files in use" and allows for automated disaster recovery. A much more
capable program than the one that ships with Windows.
Last I looked they had a 30 day trial.
