View Full Version : Is the CD and the DVD reader the same in a combined drive?

I am trying to understand if there is a software or a hardware problem
with my combined CD/RW/DVD drive on my laptop

Situation
* I can run a DVD without a problem. (I can see the DVD's files in
Explorer as well.)
* I can no longer see the files on CD/ROMs in Explorer.

Question
Is it possible that the CD/ROM reader can be physically damaged
without the DVD reader being so, i.e. is the physical reading device
the same for CD/ROMs and DVDs or different? (If the reading device is
physically identical I suppose my problem reading CD/ROMs is related
to software.)

Have you looked at device manager to check for trouble?

I think there are two different laser for CD or DVD but a
software/driver problem is more likely.

Jim and others,

Everythings seems to be fine when I look at the device driver. Can
there still be a software problem, even though the device driver
window tells me that there is no problem?

Mats
