View Full Version : resizing the pointer

Shawn

I had set my pointer arrow to an extra large size and it
was fine. Today, my computer rebooted by itself
(possible power surge?) and, from that point, forward, my
pointer arrow reverted to its former size. I went to
control panel, mouse, pointers and went down the list
to "Windows Standard Extra Large." Then I received an
error message stating "C"\windows\cursors\arrow_l.cur
file, which contains the "Normal Select" cursor, is
either missing or corrupt." The same message appears,
with slight variations, for most of the other arrow
options.

I tried System Restore to two points where the larger
arrow was working. Neither restore corrected the problem.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Shawn,

Start/run msconfig, on the general tab click "expand file"

File: arrow_I.cur
From: X:\I386
To: C:\Windows\cursors

Where X is your CD drive letter (you need to insert you WinXP CD for =
this).

An explanation of the corrupt file.

When the power surge occured, windows may have been writing that cur file to
your hard drive or reading it. Because of the surge, the file may not have
finnished being written to the disk, leaving half of the file.
Windows will then have been rebooted and in its nice way of not alerting the
user of such things, simply found this problem and used its default
alternative which happened to be the small cursor set.

Buy a battery UPS and that will solve that problem in the
future. Best $50-100 you'll spend this year. Just don't
connect your printer to the battery backed outlets.

A UPS is the best insurance policy you can have with a computer.

I've never seen this problem with any pointers other than Microsoft supplied
cursors.
Download a set of pointers from the net and apply them under Mouse
Properties in the Control Panel after placing them in the C:\Windows\Cursors
folder. You'll never have this problem again. You can copy them all to
another folder and rename them then copy them back and set Mouse Properties
to use the renamed cursors instead if you want.
You'll also have a better set of cursors which are easier on the eyes if you
download some. The ones I use are called Mother of Pearl. I've been
meaning to increase the size of them for my laptop soon myself.
If you do this although I'd not recommended it you can yank the power cord
anytime you like from the wall socket and never get this error or problem
again. The problem is not that a cursor can be corrupt the problem is that
Windows thinks it's cursors are corrupt so they are!
I used to bitch about Windows Icons and they fixed that with WindowsXP
somewhat, now they need to do something about cursors, I'm sorry but jagged
black lines surrounding a field of white, white, white is not cool at all.
In addition any icon or cursor artist who can't make a decent Icon or Cursor
of any size without using overlays and blending ought to be shot.
