I recommend putting the two CD devices on separate IDE channels to
maximize throughput when writing from one to the other.
This may resolve the DMA issue, also.

Hello
The DMA is disabled for the Hitachi CDR-8130 on all 4 IDE channels without
any other IDE devices. The Hitachi CDR-8130 works in a DMA mode in another
system.

See this page
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/tech/storage/IDE-DMA.asp

Because of the errors that are likely happening while trying to access your
CDROM, your transfer speeds are being knocked down to a safe level.

If you want to try to reset the status, goto the device manager, and remove
the devices that are connected to the IDE channel

Then remove the IDE Channel itself, then reboot.

Hello
The IDE channel Ultra DMA Mode changes to Disabled in BIOS. If I change the
Ultra DMA Mode from Disabled to 2, it is changed back to Disabled after a
restart (BEFORE WINDOWS BOOTING). Changing the IDE channel from "auto" to
"CD-ROM" and Changing its Ultra DMA Mode from Disabled to 2 in BIOS, results
in the POST fail, the ... IDE drive fail. The ... IDE drive is Hitachi
CDR-8130 CD-ROM drive. Hitachi CDR-8130 supports DMA. It works in DMA mode
in another computer. The problem is with BIOS I think. How to resolve the
problem.

Has anyone suggested that you replace the motherboard with one that
works properly?

Jack E Martinelli
April 15th 03, 04:06 PM
Then I recommend disabling all but the primry HD with the bootable OS
temporarily, by disconnecting the cables. Confirm that the system boots
fine. Then reenable each device, in turn, in the desired configuration,
confirming the cabling and jumpers at each step. Place each of the HD's
and the CD drives on separate IDE channels to optimize the throughput
when writing from one to the other. If doing so does not permit DMA
capability for all devices, which are known to have the DMA feature,
then I would conclude the m/b BIOS is having a problem with some device,
its driver, or the total configuration compatibility. Then I would seek
a new m/b with a much newer BIOS and chipset set to overcome the
problem, hopefully.

Sorry, but my magic wand is in the repair shop this week.

Hello
I disconnected all IDE devices and connected the Hitachi CDR-8130 CD-ROM
drive to primary IDE as master, then the motherboard disabled the Ultra DMA
mode for the master primary IDE drive.
ASUSTeK suggests to install 'Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility
V4.10.1012' and 'Intel Application Accelerator V2.2 Production Version' for
Windows XP. The DMA mode of the IDE port is disabled in BIOS. How could a
driver for Windows enable DMA mode in BIOS? The BIOS disables the DMA mode
before the Windows starts.
