View Full Version : Using Diskpart command to upgrade Windows XP Home drive from basic to dynamic???

Is it possible? I know that many files/features are missing from
Windows XP Home by design, but do any of the MVPs in the group know if
the Diskpart command (via a script) could successfully accomplish
this? (I'm familiar with the command's switches and dangers from the
reference material. Just never tried it before and not on Windows XP
Home.) The only stumbling block is if the most basic files used by
Windows XP Home for drive management are completely different from
their Windows XP Pro counterparts. (Yes, while many of the Disk
Management snap-ins and components are not the same between the two
versions, files such as "disk.sys" are exactly the same last time I
checked. But I may be mistaken about this. Let me know.)

Yes, I know that something like this would require alot of
experimentation on my part to get it to work. It just wouldn't be
worth the time if none of the core OS files couldn't support it
without major patches. So any information anyone can give that doesn't
violate an NDA would be appreciated. :)

Thank you so much for any information or opinions.

Dynamic disks are only available in PRO, not home.

Right, normally. But when you use the Disk Management snap-in to
convert a basic to dynamic disk, you're using the diskpart.exe utility
which also comes with Windows XP Home. And many of the various files
used for disk management by both versions of the OS (The disk.sys
driver is one example.) appear to be exactly the same. It is these
files which would be the only true stumbling block in doing such a
conversion.

I guess what I'm asking is does anyone know WHY it's not an available
option other than the fact that the Disk Management snap-in doesn't
offer it as an option? Are the files used for each version of the OS
(At least in this one area.) really that different?

Thanks any assistance. :)
