View Full Version : Re: AC'97 Driver is enabled but has not been started in WinXP

Wanted to close the loop on this. I give up. I upgraded the BIOS,
still no sound. I then yanked all the PCI cards out, including the
graphics card. The DFI uses the Intel 845G chipset. After removing
the added AGP graphics card, I had to run the Intel software delivered
with the board to enable the 845G. I got the graphics card working,
but no sound still. That's when I gave up, and put all the PCI cards
back in. Unfortunately, now the onboard RealTek LAN is not working!
I think the 845G is blocking it somehow, and Control Panel -
Add/Remove Software refuses to delete the 845G driver. If offers to,
but if I click on the Remove button, it just flashes and stays there.

I gave the computer back to my friend (unfortunately, even less
functional that when he gave it to me.) Thanks again to Steven for
trying to help.

Steven, thanks for the followup. As I send in my previous note, I've
given the box back to my friend. He took it into the place that
replaced the motherboard and they were unable to fix it, so my friend
has opted to simply wipe out the operating system (format disk) and
reinstall. I'll post back on this thread once that is done if we
still can't get things to work. To answer your question, yes, I had
installed the AC'97 software. Thanks for pointing out the hidden
devices, didn't know about that.

If your sound card came with the computer you bought=20
(without being given the CD's for the programs in the=20
computer), how do you obtain the software for the Avance=20
AC'97 Audio Driver? I have tried Microsoft looking for a=20
patch. I've gone to the site you suggested and downloaded=20
the winzip file, but it mentions a compatibility issue,=20
and then tells me I need the original CD for the sound=20
card. I don't have that. I don't really have time to=20
drop it back at the store where I purchased it and wait=20
for them to fix it, because I have a major project due=20
next week that requires pictures & music. Any=20
suggestions?

You *should* be able to download it from your motherboard manufacturer's
website.

What motherboard do you have?

Asus provides these drivers for the Avance AC97 sound chip.
ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUSCOM/TREIBER/SOUND/Avance/ (read the readme.txt
file for a description of the files so you can determine what you need)

Also make sure the sound card is enabled in your bios, or else the drivers
might not help.

If your sound card came with the computer you bought
(without being given the CD's for the programs in the
computer), how do you obtain the software for the Avance
AC'97 Audio Driver? I have tried Microsoft looking for a
patch. I've gone to the site you suggested and downloaded
the winzip file, but it mentions a compatibility issue,
and then tells me I need the original CD for the sound
card. I don't have that. I don't really have time to
drop it back at the store where I purchased it and wait
for them to fix it, because I have a major project due
next week that requires pictures & music. Any
suggestions?
