I've searched the knowledge base and not found out how to
get my XP Home computer to go ahead and shut all the way
down when I hit start, turn off, shut down the computer.

I've seen this question used as an example question but
not found the answer.

This has got to be simple, right??

-Thank You any and all!

Hi Harry,

For that to happen, it must be supported by the hardware (ATX power vs. =
AT). For some systems, this means enabling APM in the Control =
Panel/Power Options (it is not enabled by default).

I am guessing you mean to turn the computer off after shutting down instead
of presenting the it is now safe to turn off screen.

Try this registry setting:

Start > run > regedit
Browse the tree to:
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows NT\currentversion\winlogon
Click on the winlogon key and over to the right pane, find
PowerDownAfterShutDown. Double click on this and in the value data field
type 1 for enabled (power off) or 0 for disabled (display safe to turn off
screen)
If there is no PowerDownAfterShutDown then create a new DWORD with the value
name PowerDownAfterShutdown. Do this by going edit > new > dword value.
After creating the value, double click it in the right pane and set the
value data field to 1 or 0.

Click file > Exit and shut down the computer. It theoratically should turn
itself off if its a computer with the auto power off function which i think
is called ATX or ACPI compatibles.

If it doesnt shut off then it will usually restart meaning its not
compatible. Go back into the registry and change the setting to 0.

Here is an easy solution:

Assuming your XP system is on the C drive, if not change the below to
ID the proper drive.

Right click in a blank area of your screen, and check create a short
cut.

When you get to the Target and Start In lines, type in the following:

Target: C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 01
(Note the spaces)

Start In: C:\WINDOWS\system32

You can change the appearance of the Icon, just right click it,
Properties, Change Icon.

Pick out one you like.

Clicking this Icon will shut your system down, it will not give you
the option to Restart.

Harry,

You should go to MVP Jim Eshelman's Website on Shutdown T/S.
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Stepping through the procedures here, you should be able to resolve your
problem.
