Sending Wayne to a Spam site that does not answer the question directly is a
waste of your time and everyone else's.
I am sure that Wayne had found that site the same way that you did, via
Google, and is not interested in joining up either, and was hoping for an
answer here on this N.G.

This was what I was directing the user to. As I'm just=20
wasting everybody's time by responding, in the future, I=20
shall not respond at all. Hope you're all happy now. One=20
less NG poster. PS www.google.com - answers most=20
questions anyway.
From www.jsifaq.com
3343 =BB What are the %SystemRoot%\System32
\Perflib_Perfdataxxx.dat files?
The %SystemRoot%\System32\Perflib_Perfdataxxx.dat files=20
are created by the System Monitor. When you shutdown=20
normally, the file should be deleted.
If you have an abormal shutdown, these files can become=20
orphaned, and accumulate on your computer.
Under some yet to be determined circumstances, these=20
files can become orphaned during normal operation.
The best way to remove these files is to add a command in=20
a logon script:
del /q %SystemRoot%\System32\Perflib_Perfdata*.dat

What program creates them? WINDOWS (apparently stands=20
for "Will Install Needless Data On Whole System"). I mean=20
think about it, System Monitor/Performance Monitor on a=20
home edition of Windows XP? Come on Uncle Bill, you gotta=20
be kidding, right?
Not sure about Windows XP but you can access the System=20
Monitor interface by issuing "perfmon" in Windows 2000.

I ran perfmon from the Run command and searched it and=20
find no reference to these files as nothing has been=20
setup in the console. It isn't in startup and to my=20
knowledge it had never been opened until your post=20
st__steve, I have disabled all startup items from=20
msconfig and the files were still created on startup the=20
files only dated back to 8-7-02 so I must have installed=20
a windows component or update that started this some time=20
around that date. I still don't know why these files are=20
created or what service/program creates them. It seems=20
there is not much interest in helping figure this out so=20
I will go ahead and award you both the points if I don't=20
get the answer by later today. Thanks for your interest.=20

I've tried it and it doesn't work.
I hate these perflib files - I'm sure they keep changing=20

Here are my observations regarding the perflib_perfdata=20
files. I never saw these files on my computer until I=20
installed a new DVD-CD RW drive and the Nero burning=20
software that came along with it. They (the files)=20
appeared thereafter and I too went through all of the=20
gyrations listed in the thread regarding the attempts at=20
deletion.
BTW, the files are usually located in the documents and=20
setttings\username (you)\local settings\temp folder. =20
That is probably why the login script, del /q %SystemRoot%
\System32\Perflib_Perfdata*.dat, doesn't work. The path=20
is wrong. Anyhow, they will always be recreated by the=20
program that they are associated with. I knew that the=20
file creation had to be somehow related to the Nero=20
software so I began to look there. Along with the=20
burning software came a program called InCD which=20
supposedly lets one copy and write files to a CD-R or CD-
RW disk as if it were a regular drive on your system. I=20
suspected this first and removed the program. Voila!=20
After the removal of InCD there were no more Perf files=20
being created on my drive and I could delete the existing=20
one
So, many of the causes that relate to the creation of=20
these files may not be of malicious origin. Some=20
legitimate program may be doing it and you will have to=20
find out whcih one it is and whether you really need it=20
or not.

Thanks Wes, at least someone was smart enough to scroll
down past the ads. I assumed that the person/Rob would be
of enough intelligence to scroll past the ads but I guess
I was so wrong.
Obviously I'm not wanted on this NG. Many answers are
found via google - is that a sin??? I only wanted to help.

I use Experts Exchange all the time. I never look at the ads.
:o)
If you want to stick around, and I think you should,
you're gonna have to put up with a certain amount of crap.
And a lot of the time nobody even says thank you.
Just ignore the crap. IMHO I think even a negative response is
better than no response.
Let's win one for the Gipper! :o)

Okay, but I'll post under my correct name in future -
just use anon during the day when I have to use the CDO

Hi "Anon - retired",
Please accept an appology as I appear to struck a raw nerve.
As this N.G. is susposedly for "new users" and is offered from the "Help
and Support" area, I expect answers to posters questions to offer in enough
detail / in plain language / little as possible technical speech, and to
assist the ' The first computer Buyer' in clear terms if possible.
We all start at bedrock level at sometime, and I felt the O.P. got a
trite answer from you, that wasted his (Wayne's) time, and others reading
the post to increase their knowledge.
As he hasn't responded, we don't know, do we?
As for the so called "Expert's" site, I know NOW that the answer is
way, way, down the page.
But under the posted question there are TWO places to sign up so as to
'receive' the wanted answer. Just there, highlighted, no pointing to the
bottom for the free answer ?
What you get for signing up I dont know, and really dont want to find out,
as I get enough spam.
That the answer is buried below all that type, is a con act in my
opinion, and not a free site, but a rigged site to trap the inexperienced
user, and the spammers dont need any help from well meaning people.
The correct response was the 'cut & paste', which was what you intended
to achieve in the first place, and as a basic p.c. user myself, is factual,
but 'tech heavy' for a "new user", but so be it.
As for your comment re Google, their are many people who do not know how
to use a search engine for best use, and I often wonder at the patience
shown by the M.V.P's and Super Users like our Norm, God Bless him, and I
know that every time we post, we can expect to be flamed or plain ignorned
or nit picked just for trying to help out folks in dire need of an answer.

Rob;
I've been flamed for copying and pasting instead of including
a link to whatever I had copied and pasted.
You can't please everybody. :o)
[[As he hasn't responded, we don't know, do we?]]
Unfortunately a lot of CDO users never find their way
back to see any answers. I am amazed by the number
of users that *do* find their way back. I have my OE rules
set to show posts
in red and for a long time I ignored those posts. Than I thought
that wasn't fair, obviously those posters need help.
As far as the Expert's Exchange site, I happen to know
that some very savvy users have made the same mistake you did.
:o)
IMO if a poster does not understand an answer, providing they
can find their way back, the majority of posters here are more than
happy to try to explain further.
Speaking of wasted time..........
What bothers me is that when I spend some time trying to put together
an answer and:
a. The Original Poster never sees any of the posts.
b. The Original Poster sees the answer and never posts a reply.
I don't spend a lot of time worrying about it, but what do those posters
end up doing? Shell out $$$$$ at their local computer shops?
I would rather spend the time after I know the OP can find their way back.
I would rather be flamed or nit picked, it's better than being ignored.
Keep having fun!
