....many problems with programs and the above companies very unaccessible supposedly helpful "support websites"
problems:
1) i try to download security updates and my computer does nothing but takes me back to the same screen. downloads nothing.
2) when i try to download symantec norton systemworks microsoft gives me a "critical error" and shuts down.
3) for example, when downloading kb823980...i get a setup error "setup couldn not verify the integrity of the file update.inf. make sure the crytographic service is running on this computer"...what the hell does that mean
thanks for any help since humans don't work at ms or symantec.

You might try some of this:
Correct the Cryptographic Service Error Message

cryptographic service error and how to fix it
http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html
Corrects Cryptographic Error Message

Cryptographic Services

The Catroot2 problem can be avoided in the future by installing Q817287.
Windows Update 643 Error and the Catalog Database
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817287
I think they all contain the same information in the end, but -= it never
hurts to have TOO MUCH information.

For one, to stop your computer from restarting after every system failure:
a.. Right-click 'My Computer' Properties
b.. Click the 'Advanced' tab
c.. Under the 'Startup & Recovery' heading click 'Settings'
d.. Under the 'System failure' heading uncheck 'Automatically restart',
click OK twice
Note: uncheck 'Send an Administrative alert' if you also want to stop those
annoying 'Send error report to Microsoft' messages after every crash
Cryptographic service:
a.. Click 'Start' > 'Programs' > 'Administrative Tools' > 'Services'
b.. Scroll down to 'Cryptographic Service'
c.. Right-click the 'Cryptographic Service' Properties
d.. Under the heading 'Startup type' click 'Automatic' > OK
e.. On the Services Toolbar click the 'Start Service' arrow (>), now Exit
Not sure about the Windows Update site. Do you use their update site or the
'Auto Update' which does have problems on occasion?

I agree with you!!!Whatever has happened to me now means I cannot even access Microsoft tech support nor symantec(Norton)support on line. And I refuse to pay Norton for anymore- they got paid for live-update and I cannot access it either.Added to this fru
stration I cannot even go to a site like LandsEnd to buy a sweater ( "this page cannot be displayed...) nor to a secure site like postini. I have uninstalled systemworks 2003 for the last time( but Ireally blame them for whatever is going on) and any help
I get I am going to try. Someone on this dialog must have some answers for dummies like me

Item 3, and maybe it will handle item 1. Rename the folder
windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will generate a new, clean
folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.
Then get - only - Q817287 and install it, which should now be OK. It
is the cure for the problem: you should then be able to carry on with
other updates, and the problem will not recur
Item 2 - By 'Download' you are presumably meaning 'Install'. 'Download'
refers to getting things downloaded (and possibly *not* installed) from
the Internet. You have the option of not trying to install that
software - I would not have it within a mile.

Norton/Symantec are absolutely hopeless - and have you EVER tried to get
your money back for one of their programs that only 7% was
received/downloaded, all of their "customer services" on-line link options
for either refund or returns leads to a Page 404 not found error !!!

Hope you can read this as I cannot see the screen! Called symantec and went through some really rude BS. Reinstalled Norton SystemWorks2003 per instructions. Immediately got Settings Alert: Some Symantec product settings have been changed by an unautho
rized program. This can indicate that an attacker or virus is attempting to disable your protection...if I click on the go to TechSupport it takes me ther where I cannot read the screen because the alert is still on"top" of everything. If I click the OK b
utton or try the red X in upper right corner- the entire system shuts down. Earlier today I loaded SpyBot12 and did a virus check and got -0-. Is anyone else having this same problem or anything close to it?? I have been through all the change system se
ttings advice you all have passed on to me- should I just unload Norton and fight to get my money back or should I pay them for tech support???

May want to try something different to see if it is Norton or something
else bothering your system. ETrust currently has a special for XP users:
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/
I've used the antivirus program from this company for several years and
have been quite happy with it.

This isn't nortons fault. You do indeed have a newer
trojan or worm on the system. The standard AV/Spy track will
not detect them as recently, these target the AV & Spyware
removers, rendering them useless. I would suggest doing a
format and reinstall ( offline preferably). You'll need all
the update packs prior to the install (including SP1).
I recently had to do the same, as Mcafee proved useless
on this issue. Once I did the offline install and upgrade
all went well.

Norton's 'Live Update' sets for every week. youi need to update
daily, with the new 'competition' mode that the virus writers are in.

If you can't see the screen, how did you see the settings
alert and the OK button and the red X?

A few things worth trying...
1. Boot into Safe-Mode
2. Open Task Manager (Cntl-Alt-Del, click Task Mgr)
3. Click the Processes tab
a. I would "End-Task" on most of the items "except" Explorer on the
list, though you may experiment to see what is the minimum processes
needed to keep your OS running.
b. The point here is, you may have a virus running in Ram (memory)
and you want to remove the virus (by using the End-Task function).
c. If you have a friend or co-worker who has a Xp PC, take a look
at their Task Mgr Processes List. You may be able to detect an
unfamiliar process item (which may be a memory-resident virus
that is causing the alteration of your Norton installation setup).
4. After the bare minimum of processes running, see if you can
install your Norton product.
