View Full Version : Disc Cleanup doesn't

As a relatively new user of XP home I regularly clean up my disk and have IE
set to clear the internet cache on closing. Imagine how shocked I was one
day when instead of just accepting the defaults on disc cleanup I actually
went in to have a look at the temporary files. In the four cache
directories I found more than 40,000 files (yes I do mean 40,000) with a
combined file size of more than 20MB dating back to when I first got the
machine. Disc cleanup was telling me that it was about to clean out 1.5MB.

What exactly is disc cleanup cleaning, and why isn't IE clearing the cache
on exit?

It is clearing it's stuff from the cache. These are part downloaded =
pages etc.

R/c IE icon, Properties, Delete Files and tick the checkbox.

You must put a check mark in the box next to the files you
intend to clean up. You can also delete temporary Internet
files from the Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options
page.

Do you have 4 users? Each user needs to do clean up.

I have put the check mark against all of the files that I want to clean up,
Temporary files, Temporary Internet files (not so temporary when some dated
back 3 months) etc..

The clear Internet cache on exit appeared to work quite well on 98SE doesn't
seem to in XP.

There is only one user and despite setting the retention date for internet
files to 0 days IE generates 4 cache directories. I have even tried
deleting the directories but they are always regenerated.

This edit corrects the problem you are dealing with:

Disk Cleanup - Compressed Files (Row 49)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

1. Go to Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter.
2. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Volume
Caches
3. Open "Compress Old Files" folder
4. Delete all files in this folder
5. Reboot
6. Run Disk Cleanup

The above info I received from a Microsoft MVP in another newsgroup when I
had the same problem.

That is not a solution to the problem that the poster has, but to a =
different one. There is no problem the poster has - it's working as =

Oh - Well I suppose that that is to be expected - Microsoft gives you a
utility that doesn't do what it's supposed to do.

In my ignorance I thought that Disk Cleanup was supposed to make more room
on your drive by deleting those unnecessary temporary files that accumulate
in the cache files. I just find it extraordinary that a supposed cleanup
tool can allow 40,000 files to accumulate - even if the majority are zero
length, and can continually tell lies about what files are there.

Now that I know that it does that I'll swear off Microsofts solution and do
the job manually. I guess the old saying holds true - "If a job's worth
doing, it's worth doing yourself".

I automate nothing. A couple of mouse click doesn't take long.

Best bet....go to www.webroot.com and get Window Washer. It will clean up
all the garbage. They also have plugins you can download to cleanup mess
left by other programs, such as your media player.
Works with xp, 98, 95 & etc.
