Reads DVD's, but not CD-ROM's

Ever since an encounter with InterActual's DVD Player 2.0
software (it came with the Monsters Inc. DVD, and then I
uninstalled it), my DVD-ROM now can only read DVD's, but
not CD-ROM's, nor CD's. When a CD is placed in the drive,
the drive spends about 15 seconds trying to figure out
what it is. Trying to open the drive through Windows XP's
My Computer yields this error message:

"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be
corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not
compatible with Windows."

I suspect a registry problem, but I haven't a clue what to
do. It seems I'm not the first with this problem, but I
have yet to find a solution. Help?!

It seems I have the same problem. A while back my DVD player which
worked fine for 1.5 years stopped working for all formats. I removed
drivers, updated drivers, ran Norton utilities and I got the same
"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or
it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows."

So I figured the laser on my Pioneer DVD player went bad and gave up.
It took a few months but I finally bought a Pioneer DVD-117 DVD-Rom as
a replacement, installed it last night and to my surprise I have same
problem.

If I knew what I know now I would have done a registry restore to fix
this issue when it first occurred but now I would have to use a
registry that is 2 to 3 months old.

I searched Google groups the last few days and found quite a few
people reporting a similar problem but have found no real answers
other than to reformat and reinstall windows.. There has got to be a
better way...

Any suggestions, anyone?
