View Full Version : I might bite bullet on SP2..but!

Can I back it out easily? or when SP2 becomes official, can I upgrade from
SP2-RC1 to the 'real' SP2? Or do I have to nuke my box reinstall the OS and
then install it.

Cheers

There is currently no "real" SP2.

One should not install the SP2 RC1 beta on a computer that
is vital. Only install it if you understand the ramifications of
using beta software since you may end up reinstalling your
Windows XP operating system. And no, one cannot "upgrade"
from SP2 RC1 beta to the released version later on. You'll
have to uninstall it first.

There is a new newsgroup dedicated to SP2 beta you should post to.

Tom;
First of all SP2 is a Release Candidate not the release version due in
a few months.
Because of that, do not install on a production machine or any machine
with data you value.
RC1 is intended for evaluation and testing.
RC1 is unsupported and strictly at your own risk.

Once installed, SP2 can be uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs.
It is best to uninstall RC1 SP2 before installing the release version.

Don't bother unless you feel a real need to reinstall your OS. SP2 RC1 has
several bugs, none of which affected stability, all of which were annoying.
ie. fonts, loss of C & P, etc. It did not offer an uninstall option. YMMV

Don/t bother. It gave me constant crashes. Besides I figured I don't use
XP's firewall, don't use Outlook Express, don't use Internet Explorer, and
don't use automatic updates,,,,so there is not much it in for me personally.

Hmm, that sounds very similar to windows xp itself.

Greetings --

You'll have to uninstall the SP2RC1 before you can install the
final version. Should you decide to install it , you'll notice that
you're not given a choice of archiving the old systems files (to
facilitate the removal of the service pack) or not; it just happens.
Unless something goes wrong, however, you shouldn't have to nuke your
system.

Just curious.. I'm very happy with zone alarm and popup killer and I
understand that sp2 has something similar to these apps. Is it easy to
select what functions I want to add to my system when I install sp2? Anybody
here know?
Thanks

If you're "very happy" with your current setup, do not install SP2 RC1. It's
still very much a beta. The firewall does add outgoing protection this time
around.

Hi

There is no options to not install the functions, but you can enable
and disable them as you want after the installation is finished.

What have you experienced re: outgoing protection in SP2 beta?
In have not seen any outgoing protection in either build 2055 or 2096 (RC1).

The installation basically installs all items.
I have seen it be somewhat selective re: the Windows Firewall settings that
it enables.
It is easy to disable most items.

I have run ZA free and BID in SP2 RC1 w/o problems.

I've had no problems what-so-ever with SP2 the firewall is much more
controllable and the pop-up stopper actually works (even on sites that my

What I'm curious about though is does anybody know a good site to TEST the
firewall?

You have to use the uninstall back to as it was; nuke and reinstall; or
(what I do) have an image backup of the prior state of things to
restore.

thanks everyone for your input. Sorry I couldn't reply. I forgot about this
post until now. Reason I was interested was merely for the firewall and
testing the popup protection, but I think I can wait.

My XP is running nicely now and I don't think I'm going to break that right
now. My data and stuff is always backed up to DVD.. I could suffer a dual HD
crash and not be too upset(oh wait, that happened last week) but thanks
again.. to the MVP's telling me to post on the SP2 newsgroup, I knew that,
thanks. I didn't think subscribing to a newsgroup to ask 1 question about
SP2 was required, thus my reason for posting here.

Thanks again, everyone.

Greetings --

Sorry, but that's not correct. SP2 does not add any capability to
monitor or control outbound traffic to WinXP's built-in firewall. It
does slightly increase the configurability of the firewall, but it's
still no match for any 3rd party firewall applications.

Greetings --

You can test your firewall at:

Symantec Security Check
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/vr_main.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=GPVHGBYNCJEIMXQKCDT

Security Scan - Sygate Online Services
http://www.sygatetech.com/

There is another firewall scanner/tester at
https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2, but it's not as thorough as the
first two; it doesn't even scan one of the ports used by the messenger
service spam.

It does a lot more than slightly increase the configurability of the
firewall it greatly increases it. But your right it's still no match for 3rd
party apps. i am using it plus my router firewall just for kicks. I am not
crazy about my router FW because it's configuraton settings are done online.

Launching Windows Messenger created a popup window asking for permission to
access the network. Other MS apps may have prompted. I can't quite recall as
I reinstalled the OS short order.

wojo
March 24th 04, 05:21 AM
I had to give permissions two or three times to the XP SP2 Firewall so yes
outgoing is supported.

Well since it seems most people, for some reason or another, weren't able to
successfully install SP2 RC1 on their boxes I suppose not too many people
have seen the outgoing support of the firewall.

It asked me for permission for Mcafee AV, for MSN Messenger, and for my SMC
Router firewall.
OE was apparently automatically configured, it didn't ask permission for it.

I don't understand why that says it automatically allows all outgoing when
that clearly wasn't the case on my computer. It also doesn't have any
outgoing options when you open the firewall settings.
This doesn't make much sense since the firewall program opened and asked if
I wanted to grant outgoing permission on 3 different occasions. I need to do
further research on the subject I think so I can find out what the deal is.

From the article:
Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

February 20, 2004

This preliminary document applies to the beta release of for Microsoft®
Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) for the 32-bit versions of Windows XP
Professional and Windows XP Home Edition. It does not describe all of the
changes that will be included in the final release of the service pack.

Windows Firewall will automatically allow all outbound connections,
regardless of the program and the user context

For typical consumer and office computers, the computer is a client on the
network. Software on the computer connects out to a server (an outbound
connection) and gets responses back from the server. Windows Firewall allows
all outbound connections, but applies rules to the types of communication
that are allowed back into the computer. For more information about what
network traffic Windows Firewall allows as part of Transmission Control
Protocol (TCP) and User Data Protocol (UDP) outbound connections, see Notes,
below

I aid I was gong to look into it further and I did.
It appears that myself and, presumably, S. Heenan didn't actually read the
firewall pop-up closely enough. I discovered this when I tried to run MS
Frontpage. The message poped up again and I read it a little closer. It is
asking permission for the program to accept INCOMING transmissions so it had
nothing at all to do with outgoing protection.
That's a bummer but at least I got to the bottom of it.
