Run defrag, XP is indexing the files for faster finds, but
even though you just installed you have badly fragmented
disk. The arm is rapidly moving full travel.

| I recently performed a clean XP Pro installation on a new
| hard drive (Hitachi 20Gig) in a Toshiba Satellite 2210XCDS
| (my old 6Gig broke). The installation went without a
| glitch. The hard drive is setup with NTFS file system and
| partitioned (10 Gig/partition). So far, I have not
| installed any updates, not even SP1 or security updates.
| The notebook runs very nicely with the new hard drive,
| except...
|
| When the computer is idle, the hard drive is accessed
| every three or so minutes. When this happens, it makes
| the usual spining noise, followed by a clicking sound.
| The duration is very short, about one second. Sometimes,
| the clicking noise occurs two or three times in a row
| before the next cycle starts.
|
| I tried Intel Application Accelerator, but failed due to
| the BX440 chipset not supported by IAA.
|
| I checked the DMA status. It is being set at DMA Mode 2
| for both Primary and Secondar IDE channels. That looks
| normal to me.
|
| Other applications on the hard drive: Office XP, Acrobat,
| Norton Antivirus, Winamp, and Winrar.
|
| Anyone with an idea for a fix? Or a point in the right
| direction for me to investigate this problem further?
| Thanks a lot.
