Eric,

When you are in Explorer, can you click on the File menu
and get the drop down, or does it also hang here?

Check for spyware. Install one of the free removers available from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update after installing.

Yes. I've been having the same problem lately. When I go
to Task Manager, it'll show that processes number for
explorer.exe is looping between 50,000 to over 100,000.
Nothing else will be running. Task Manager also shows
that 95% of CPU resources are being used. By what,
though? I have scanned repeatedly with McAfee VirusScan
Online, AdAware and SpywareBlaster, Spybot, and a new one
called HijackThis.exe. Check out the last one. You'll be
amazed at how much all the others missed. I still have
several pieces of spyware on my machine after using all
five previous software applications. What the heck is
going on?

Go to SystemInternals and download a program called
Diskmon. It will show all disk activity in real time. From
this info, you may be able to further diagnose the CPU
usage.

Okay Eric, see if this helps.

I, like countless other people, had exactly the same problem, except
in my case I had it on two PC's. I was about to format and reinstall
when I ran across the answer (in this case) by accident.

I had a corrupt ".avi" file on both PCs (the same file) which I had
been unable to delete, so I had just ignored it. This was what was
causing explorer.exe to cycle repeatedly. If you have an ".avi" file
you can't delete, then here's what to do (I don't know your level of
knowledge, so I made it as simple as possible):

1. Open a DOS Window (Start -> Run -> type "cmd", then Enter)

2. Navigate to the offending file.
(Type "cd\" to go to the c:\ prompt. Type "cd <directory name>" to
move up the levels. Type "dir" to see the files in a particular
directory)

3. Now... open Task Manager (Ctrl, Alt, Delete)

4. Click on the "Processes" tab.

5. Highlight "explorer.exe" (your old friend).

6. Click on the "End Process" button (your screen will go blank,
except for your wallpaper... this is to be expected).

7. Return to the DOS Window (Hold down the Alt button down and then
keep clicking the TAB button (the one on the left of the keyboard with
the two arrow pointing in different directions) until you get back to
the DOS Window.)

8. Now, type "del <the_file_name.avi>" and hit Enter (this should
delete the ".avi" file (the full name, including the .avi bit)).

9. Finally, return to Task Manager and click on File -> New Task
(Run...). Type "explorer.exe" and hit OK (This should restart
explorer).

This fixed my problem... hope it helps you. I would be interested to
know if it does.

OK. Figured out a different way that's a bit easier. In Task Manager, shut down explorer.exe, then go to 'file' in Task Manager, click on browse, find the file and kill it. Start exploere.exe. back up, and voila. Works like a charm.

I'm having the same problem, with 'explorer.exe' taking up 99% of the
CPU time. Started yesterday.

Unfortunately, all the earlier parts of this thread have scrolled off
and are no longer available. All I see is a mention to delete some file,
but not which file, or any other details.

Can you briefly state again which file is the problem?

My problem started yesterday. My monitor died in the midst of an
Outlook Express session. I powered down the PC via the front panel, did
some swapping of monitors (turned out a power supply had died, so I
swapped it out for a different one), and rebooted. The "cpu usage:
100%" problem hit, and I have not been able to do anything since.

(This is being typed on a different computer -- that one running XP Home
is next to useless until this is fixed)
