XP Problem on Startup -- Beeping and Icon Flicker

I have an HP computer running XP, and it has suddenly
started beeping on startup. The beeping stops when the
XP splash page starts. Then the desktop appears and the
icons flicker -- the Norton recycle bin, the start
button, and the taskbar at the bottom right. It will
stop if I hit the escape key.

Any ideas? I've scanned and cleaned up viruses. Not
sure what else to do.
