I have windows xp professional and am planning to load it
on my 400 MHz AMD computer. Does anyone know if at some
point in the future I want to upgrade my motherboard and
processor, if my Windows XP can still be legitimately used
with my upgraded machine? Is there a link that you know
up that explains this? Thanks,
Bill

Yes, certainly. You can do any upgrades you want at any time. If
you do enough upgrades, you will have to reactivate, but that
isn't a problem. If reactivation takes place after 120 days, it
will work over the internet just as it did the first time.

Worst case, if you change enough components within 120 days,
you'll have to activate by a 5-minute voice call to an 800
number.

If you have a retail version of Windows XP then there is no problem.
The product is licensed to you and you can use it on any one computer
(but only one) that you want. It may require reactivation but that
should not a problem.

If you have an OEM version of Windows XP then there may be a potential
problem because the license is locked to the first *computer* that it
is installed on and there is a possible question as to how many parts
you can change and still consider it to be the same computer. But
with just the motherboard and CPU changed that should not be an issue.

In any event when you do the motherboard upgrade you will have to do a
Repair Install of your Windows XP in order to get the correct drivers
and configuration settings into place. MVP Michael Stevens has a web
page describing the procedure in detail at

Good luck
