installing a serial printer

I have windows xp pro and I am trying to install a serial
printer using the generic/text only driver on com1. it
installs fine but will not print a test page. the test
page is sent but does not print on printer. any
suggestions

Make sure the COM port settings are identical as those configured on the
printer or the job will go to vapor.
