I have a friend with a new Compaq computer with WindowsXP. His problem is
that if he leaves the computer unused for a period of time, he cannot wake
up the computer. He has checked his power settings and they are set as "home
use" display turns off after 15 minutes and "system (or hd) turns off
"never". Several calls to Compaq support resulted in no resolution. Their
final suggestion is to reformat the hard drive. Something he is loathe to do
after installing a lot of software, besides he has an acquaintance with the
same problem and reformatting worked for a while but now the computer is
back to its old tricks. Any ideas anyone?

Take the computer back to the store, get your money back, and buy something
better. Compaq's comments should have told you they couldn't be trusted.

Open Device Manager and check the properties for the keyboard and the
mouse. If there is a Power Management page for either of these, choose the
settings that exclude those devices from going into standby and check the
box to allow them to bring the system out of standby.
