I have an HP scanjet 5100c which has worked splendidly
diasy chained with an HP laserjet5L on the parallel port.

HP don't have upgrade for XP but suggest I user the WIA
drivers.

I have removed the Laserjet to a USB input and deleted
the parallel version.

Within the scanner plugged in and pressing 'Scan' I
get 'New hardware' and HP scanjet option.

However when I select this I get 'Another device is using
this port. Cannot proceed.' error.

Do I have to remove the LPT1 Device manager? If so, will
it be detected when I try again.

I know scanners are inexpensive, but sentiment dictates
that I should not put an old friend on the scrap heap.

TIA

Make sure you really did uninstall the printer! It sounds like you missed
out the crucial step of removing the drivers from XP from the Server
Properties, so let's try again.

1. Disconnect the Printer and the Scanner from the PC.

2. Uninstall any printer and scanner software from Add/Remove Programs in
the Control Panel.

3. Then go to Printers & Faxes and right click and delete your printer.

4. Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Go to the Hardware
tab and look for the Imaging Devices line. Click on the + sign to expand
the tree. Right click and uninstall any scanner devices that may be there.

Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer. Go back to Printers & Faxes
in the Control Panel and from the toolbar, select File, Server Properties.

In the drivers tab, delete all the entries for the printer.

While you're still there, click on the Ports tab. If LPT1 is still showing
the Printer, highlight and select Delete Port.

Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer.

Download a new set of drivers from the printer manufacturer's website

Follow the instructions at the printer manufacturer's website and only
connect the printer to the USB port when the software tells you to do so.

Now install the scanner to the LPT port. Hopefully it will gain a new lease
on life.

Thanks for coming in, but . . .

Having done this, and uninstalled the LPT1 port, on
restarting the new hardware wizard goes into a 'tizz'
immediately and says the scanner 'is not supported'

We know that, but HP said that pressing the 'Scan' button
would load the 'W.I.A.' drivers. It did try before but
now the 'Scan' button is dead. Where/what are the W.I.A.
drivers?

(I have spoken firmly, but kindlily, to my beloved 5100C
Scanjet whispering that it is for the scrap heap if it
doesn't cooperate - I hope this was not a mistake!)
