I have a Micron PIII machine running XP Pro (SP1)... quite well... I've
upgraded just about everything but I'm wondering if it's safe and/or
advisable to upgrade the motherboard chipset drivers...

System information reports the Chipset as VIA VT71C694X Apollo Pro133A and
drivers for all VIA functions, e.g. CPU to AGP Controller, CPU to PCI
Bridge, PCI to ISA Bridge, etc., as Microsoft Version 5.1.2600.0

Later versions of the drivers are available from VIA at www.viaarena.com
which states:

"VIA Hyperion drivers are suitable for any VIA chipset and all Microsoft
Windows"

Is this update a safe procedure ? Is setting a restore point a safe enough
recovery strategy if the update should fail ? Has anyone done this ?
Thought and recommendations would be appreciated...

Thanks... timb

I would say yes, yes and yes to your three questions, I haven't had any
problems with the Hyperion drivers on my Via chipset PCs.
