View Full Version : Serial Mouse Install Trouble

I have a really really old Logitech serial mouse. I've been able to
use it on Windows versions up to NT 4 (haven't tried 2000). In NT it
works fine with a standard serial mouse driver. With XP (Pro) the
mouse isn't auto-detected, which isn't terribly suprising. The
trouble is I can't manually add the standard mouse driver because when
I go through the Add Hardware dialog there are no mouse drivers
listed. Not even the standard Microsoft Serial Mouse (which I know
exists because it is auto-loaded if I plug a MS serial mouse into the
computer). Also, Logitech says that there are native drivers that
will support their serial mice. But since my mouse isn't
auto-detected I need to add the driver manually.

Does anyone know how I can get access to the drivers that the Add
Hardware dialog isn't showing me?

Thanks a lot.

You can buy a new optical mouse for anywhere from $0.01 to
$50. Put the old mouse on the shelf and buy a nice new PS/2
or USB mouse or trackball. You've already spent more time
and effort than a new mouse would cost.

The mouse I have has a far better ergonomic design than any mouse I
can buy today. I have a drawer full of PS/2 mice that I am not
interested in using.

I would appreciate hearing from someone who has information about
manually adding native drivers that don't show up in the Add Hardware
dialog.

Thank you.

What mouse is that? Have you thought about putting the guts
from a new mouse in your old housing?

I prefer the MS Trackball Optical because I don't have to
move my whole arm to use it.

I've got a Logitech mouse that comes as a PS/2 item, and I bought an
adapter to convert it to serial. XP seems to have no trouble with either
version. Might you have to adjust something in BIOS?

Does the add hardware allow you to browse to your choice of
driver. Can you install your serial mouse and then does it
show in device manager? If so, you could use device manager
to update the driver.
