View Full Version : Memory upgrade

I am running XP on my HP Pavillion XP788 with 256 megs of
RAM. My motherboard[North Bridge System Chipset: AMD-751
(Irongate)] info says I can upgrade to a limit of 512
megs. However, when I try to do this, upon rebooting the
memory count is correct, I get to the sign-in screen, and
I sign in and then I get an error message saying either:
STOP 0x0000008e,
STOP 0x00000050 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA,
Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:
System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys

among others and then it starts a memory dump.

To troubleshoot the problem I have tried both sticks of
memory one at a time in each of two slots and both slots
and sticks work fine. The pc came with 128 megs of RAM
and if I use that stick with one of the 256 sticks I get
the same problem.

Can anyone help? Just give me some direction or some
ideas. I'd sure appreciate it!

Greetings --

Actually, you should have checked with the PC's manufacturer, or
www.crucial.com before buying anything. It's absolutely essential
that any new RAM module be compatible with both the motherboard and
any other RAM module(s) in the system. Additionally, there are
sometimes jumper switches on older motherboards that need to be reset
for the new RAM configuration. Consult your motherboard's manual.
